The virus is one of the main causes of <strong>cervical cancer<\/strong> (also called cervical carcinoma) and can therefore be very dangerous for women. HPV is transmitted through direct physical contact (such as during sexual intercourse), whereby the viruses can penetrate through tiny injuries of the skin or mucosa.<\/p>\n<p>Usually an infection causes benign tumours, such as warts. Although there are a few types of the virus which bear a high risk, as they can cause malicious tumours. The types <strong>HPV 16<\/strong> and <strong>HPV 18<\/strong> (which are transmitted via sexual intercourse) are part of these dangerous pathogens. They are responsible for most cervix carcinomas (cervical cancers).<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, an <strong>HPV<\/strong> <strong>vaccination<\/strong> has been available since 2006. It protects women against approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases and 90% of genital warts.<\/p>\n<p>This protection, which consists of three partial vaccinations, is most effective if it is given to girls or women before their first sexual intercourse. Therefore, the <strong>most suitable age for the vaccination is between 9 and 14 years<\/strong>.
