Acupuncture is a holistic form of therapy based on TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Holistic means that not only the body, but also emotions and feelings are focus of the treatment – as in TCM, feelings and mental aspects are considered to be a trigger of many diseases. Moreover, various factors such as environmental influences, diet and living conditions as well as stress are also believed to cause pain or health problems.

Therefore, as a vital part of TCM, acupuncture therapy does not only affect the point of the therapeutic stimulus locally but has a holistic effect on the entire organism. This helps to balance various disrupted bodily functions. It is not without reason, that the tradition of acupuncture has been preserved for 3000 years. After all, it effectively helps against various problems and pains, and majorly increases well-being.

Especially during pregnancy, acupuncture can be an ideal and gentle way to relieve pregnancy-related symptoms. It effectively and gently counteracts typical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, lower back pain, headaches, or sleep problems.

Another great use of acupuncture is for birth preparation. The reason being, is that it ideally prepares the mother mentally and physically for delivery. Namely not only by relieving physical discomfort, but also by helping her to relax. Another fantastic bonus of pre-labor acupuncture is that it can help to shorten and reduce labor pains.

Timing & frequency of treatments

Generally, it is possible to start acupuncture for pregnancy-related issues anytime during pregnancy. But usually the therapy starts as soon as the problems appear. Between the onset of the symptoms and childbirth, typically about 4-6 sessions take place.

We usually start pre-labor acupuncture therapy from the 36th week of pregnancy and recommend one session per week until birth. The frequency of sessions can be individually adjusted, but the gap between two acupuncture treatments should be at least 4 days.

Effects of acupuncture during pregnancy

Acupuncture can be used in many ways during pregnancy. It helps with typical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, lower back pain, headaches, heartburn, and digestive problems, as well as with water retention and difficulty falling and staying asleep. In addition, acupuncture is often used in labor preparation.

The treatment of certain pregnancy-related issues with conventional medication may not always be suitable and risk-free. However, due to hormonal changes, a lot is happening in the bodies of expecting mothers. Hence, discomforts unfortunately often accompany their pregnancies.

If you are looking for alternative but effective treatment methods for your pregnancy-related problems, or for ideal labor preparation – a gentle acupuncture treatment at VenusMed may be right for you.

What an acupuncture session looks like

Before your acupuncture treatment at VenusMed, you will have an appointment with Dr. Anita Sander (medical specialist for physical medicine and rehabilitation) to go through your medical history with you.

During the treatment itself, fine stainless-steel needles (with a diameter between 0.14 and 0.20 mm) are placed in acupuncture points of the skin. These specific points are located on so-called meridians – which according to TCM are energy pathways that flow through the body.

In an acupuncture session at VenusMed, our patients sit or lie in a position that is comfortable for them. Depending on the individual symptoms, our specialised doctors acupuncture the points that can alleviate discomfort or pain. Typically, the needles stay at these points for 20 to 30 minutes, while our patients remain in a relaxing position and enjoy the treatment.

Our patients often feel a pleasant tingling sensation or warmth that suddenly flows through their body during the treatment. These are signs that the therapy is working and that it stimulates blood circulation, the nervous system and also the activity of certain organs.
