About sex therapy

Just like any type of psychotherapy, sex therapy is about solving problems through talking with a therapist. Sex therapy helps with difficulties with your sex life as well as with disorders that can be reflected in sexual behaviors and in your sexual experience. The goal is to help patients successfully overcome physical and emotional difficulties and to enable them to have a happy relationship as well as a pleasurable sex life.

Sex therapy is a form of psychotherapy – it does not involve any physical contact between the therapist and the patient. Instead, it gives you the opportunity to freely talk about your experiences, worries and feelings in a safe environment. In therapy, you can address all sorts of problems, such as those relating to your sexual function, sexual feelings, and intimacy – in either individual or couple conversations.

Talking about sex and intimacy can feel strange and uncomfortable at first. Maybe it might even scare you. But our sex therapists are trained to help you feel comfortable in conversation. What is more, they are experienced in identifying and exploring sexual problems. We also offer the option of choosing the basic treatment method yourself, which can add to making the therapy sessions as pleasant as possible for you. Thus, you will be able to choose whether you would like to work with a behavioural therapist or a systemic therapist, and to pick the setting you personally prefer.

Who sex therapy is for

Sex therapy can be of incredible value for people of all ages, genders, and sexual orientations. The therapy can help resolve numerous sexual problems, such as:

  • Lack of physical reactions to touch or erotic and sexual fantasies
  • Problems with sexual desire or arousal
  • The feeling of being unable to fulfill sexual desires
  • Problems or confusion around sexual interest or orientation
  • Impulsive or compulsive sexual behaviour
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Problems achieving orgasm
  • Pain during sex
  • Problems of intimacy related to disabilities or chronic illnesses
  • Problems related to past sexual experiences

This list contains only a few examples to demonstrate the types of problems the therapy can be useful for. Of course, every person is unique and has other concerns or other reasons for seeking sex therapy.

Process & goal of the therapy

Therapy usually begins with the patient describing his or her individual sexual difficulties. These can sometimes be rather complicated, and your therapist needs to get a good picture of all the factors involved. Usually, this is done through an initial in-depth assessment of your personal situation and your background. Of course, the description of your sexual problems and/or relationship difficulties also play a part in this assessment.

Together with our specialised therapists, you will then create coping mechanisms to improve your future reactions. You will for example learn to talk about your sexual experience, to express your wishes, to accept and discover your own body and to become more aware of your partner’s body. Apart from that, you will also learn to avoid feelings of fear and suffering. If there are problems due to general conflicts in your partnership, then this will also become a topic in therapy. The aim of sex counseling is to help you find your way back to a fulfilled sex life.

If you are in a relationship, we recommend including your partner in sessions with your sex therapist.

During the therapy, you (or you and your partner) may also be given some “homework”. This can help you apply what you have learned in therapy, during the time between sessions.

The amount of sessions you ultimately need of course differs for everyone. But sex therapy is usually relatively short-term. The reason being some difficulties can be addressed very quickly in just a few sessions. Sometimes even only one clarifying discussion is enough. However, on average it typically takes about 5 to 20 sessions.
