If you want to be sure who the father of your child is, or if you want to know whether you are the father of a child, you can get clarity very easily with a paternity test at VenusMed. After all, uncertainty about parentage can be a serious burden for many fathers, children, or mothers. In the case of a partnership separation, clear evidence of the parentage of children can be relevant from a legal point of view, for example in the case of custody or alimony proceedings.

Procedure of a paternity test

For the test a swab of the mucosa on the inside of the cheek is taken with a sterile cotton swab, from both the child and the father in question. It will then be checked in the laboratory whether the DNA of the father and child match. Taking the sample is absolutely easy and painless and therefore, it is also possible with newborns.

The samples taken are then processed in the laboratory using chemical and physical methods for extracting the DNA from the cells. The selected DNA segments are then reproduced and examined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The result is the genetic fingerprint or the person’s DNA profile.

About half of the genetic information of every child comes from the father. Therefore, 50% of the DNA fragments in the child’s sample must be identical to the father’s sample for him to be the biological father. If no matches are found, the father in question is 100% not the child’s sire.

The exact probability of the analysis’ scientific result depends on the DNA of the person examined. With a positive test result, which confirms paternity, the actual probability is up to 99.99999%, but usually it is at least 99.99%.

Ultimately, the test result is available after about 2-3 days already, and you will receive a detailed written report about it.

What exactly is examined in a paternity test?2020-09-16T09:08:22+00:00

The test determines whether a possible father of a child is his or her father. In the laboratory, the genetic fingerprint, or the DNA profile of the person to be tested is examined from a sample. To determine the potential father as the child’s sire, 50% of the DNA fragments in the child’s sample must match the father’s sample.

Can you do a paternity test with hair?2020-09-16T09:07:24+00:00

In principle, it is possible to do a paternity test with hair. However, this method is out of date and is now largely replaced by other, more modern methods. In addition, the test with hair samples only works if the hair in question still has roots. This is because the DNA material that is needed for the test is only stored in these.

We do the test with samples from swabs from the oral mucosa. This way we can guarantee that the test meets all modern requirements and brings utmost certainty.
