If you miss your period, or if you experience physical changes that could be a sign of pregnancy, you should take a pregnancy test.

You can easily make an appointment at VenusMed in Vienna. Either by phone on +43 1 890 80 70, via email at info@venusmed.at or by using our contact form below. We also give appointments at short notice!

You can come to us at any time during our opening hours to have a free pregnancy test – even without prior notification. If your pregnancy test is positive, you can also have an ultrasound done by us to determine when the pregnancy has started.

Procedure of a pregnancy test

For the free urine test at VenusMed, you will first give us a urine sample. A test stick is then dipped into it for a few seconds. After a few minutes, the result will be visible. It is negative if only the individual control strip remains, which means “not pregnant”. If a second test strip shows up, the test is positive, which means you are pregnant.

You should do a pregnancy test if you miss your menstrual period, or if you notice any changes in your body that could be signs of pregnancy. These could be, for example, tender breasts, pain in the abdomen, extreme tiredness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, mood swings, cravings for food or sensitivity to smells. The free urine test in our clinic is accurate from the first day of your missed period (this corresponds to about the 14th day after fertilisation). From this day onwards, the concentration of the hormone hCG in the urine is so high, that it does not matter whether you use the first morning urine for it or not. The hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is measured with the test, is produced by the female body as soon as a fertilised egg cell has implanted in the uterine lining.

The urine test result is very safe with 90-99% accuracy. Moreover, the longer you are pregnant, the more accurate the result of the test is. For example, a urine test that is done very early (e.g. before your missed period) can in some cases show a negative result, even though a pregnancy exists. However, a false positive result is not possible.

Procedure of an ultrasound scan

For this examination, you will first make yourself comfortable on the couch in our treatment room. With the help of an ultrasound device, one of our medical specialists will then examine your uterus. In the early stages, the amniotic cavity of the uterus can be made visible, and a little later the position and the heartbeat of the embryo can be seen.

FAQs

Pregnant: when first signs?2020-09-16T09:01:51+00:00

If you miss your menstrual period, a urine test can tell you whether you are pregnant. But some women may feel some signs that could point to a pregnancy earlier already. These can include nausea, vomiting, cravings, tender breasts, tiredness, mood swings, frequent urination, light bleeding or an increased body temperature. These symptoms can, however, differ from woman to woman, or not occur at all in some women.

When is the best time to have a pregnancy test?2020-09-16T09:01:08+00:00

You should do a test if you miss your period or if you notice any changes in your body that could be signs of pregnancy. There are two different types of urine tests – one can be used from the first day of your missed period, and the other one (early test) can be done about 4 days before. However, the early test has a high error rate and is therefore not particularly accurate. Therefore, it may be better to do the pregnancy test from the first day of your missed period. Since the hormone hCG is highly concentrated from this day onwards, as opposed to the early test, it does not matter what time of day you take the pregnancy test.

Which urine is best for pregnancy tests?2020-09-16T08:56:37+00:00

For an early test (which can be done about 4 days before the usual onset of your period), it is recommended to use the first morning urine. Because in the first urine after getting up in the morning, the hormone hCG, which is generally not that high in the beginning of pregnancy, is most concentrated. However, such an early test is not particularly accurate because it has a high error rate. It is therefore recommended to do a pregnancy test from the day your period is due.

With a urine test from the day on which your period should start, it does not matter which particular urine is used for the test – because if you are pregnant, the hormone hCG will be consistently high then.

Why does frequent urination in early pregnancy occur?2020-09-16T08:55:58+00:00

One of the symptoms in early pregnancy may be the need to urinate more often. The hormone progesterone is responsible for this increased need to urinate (during both day and night). This is because it has a relaxing effect on the bladder muscles. The pelvic area is also supplied with more blood during pregnancy, which stimulates the kidneys to work harder: Therefore, they produce more urine. In addition, in early pregnancy the uterus is small, but it grows quickly. Therefore, it puts more pressure on the bladder.

Terminology

For doctors, medical terms are important and a matter of course. However, the terminology can often puzzle patients. In our glossary we explain the medical terms which are often used in our clinic environment.
